The “heavenly peaks” of the Tienshan Mountains rise majestically above barren pastures and rugged hills. Thousands of animals live here as well as Kyrgyz semi-nomads who roam among the mountains. It is said that horses render these people wings. Also, they are essential for survival. The songs of the Kyrgyz folk ensemble Ordo Sakhna mirror the rhythm of daily life in this harsh environment. The focus is on two very different families: their hopes, their dreams, their rituals – and of course their horses.)

Outdoor days mean freedom, confidence and healthy risks. Small and big stories await city dwellers and trigger transformations. How do children, teenagers and their parents learn to handle risks while out and about in nature? How much space, solitude and freedom do we all need in order to learn to act responsibly? This film demonstrates just how instructive days in the great outdoors are, how they shape us and enable us to laugh, cry, reflect and ultimately grow up.)

The films by John (Gion) Peter Casanova provide the oldest 35mm footage of the Surselva region. Unique images grant insights into the everyday life of around a hundred years ago. We see woodworkers dressed in smocks and hats who toil in the deep snow of Val Dadens in Silgin as well as mountain farmers who descend huge cartloads of hay to the valley in winter. Also on display are the festive church fair procession in Vrin and the Zignau mudslide of 1927. Emotive images which at the time probably made it all the way to American cinemas.

When a a group of Europeans asks a Sherpa family to accompany them on a tour up the never-climbed east face of imposing Mount Kumbhakarna, this causes a moral dilemma. Not only because the summit presents an even greater challenge than Mount Everest. The bigger problem is that according to the family’s religion, this mountain range is sacred and must not be approached. However, the family is also in urgent need of money: this commission is the only way for their son to attend school and become a doctor. Thus, they all set out to ascend to the gods.)

A remote mountain hut keeps bringing them together time after time. Simplified life appeals to them: no running water, no electricity and no mobile phone network. This is something they cherish very much in today’s fast-paced digital world. But it also takes a lot of work to maintain such an old hut.

The rocks of Emery County, Utah, offer everything a bouldering freak might dream of. But the Salt Lake City “punk climbers” who descend upon this valley in the 1990s look like aliens to the local Mormons. A massive chasm divides the “scumbag climbers” from traditional ranchers and miners. “Honestly, we thought we were going to be invaded by a bunch of stoners,” the sheriff remembers. Then a festival is put together: the settlers start bouldering and the climbers try their hand at bull riding.
Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen have received numerous awards.

Picture a small mountain village in the middle of the Karakoram, one of the world’s highest mountain ranges, situated near the Chinese border. Hardly any electricity, no running water, only accessible by jeep. Shimshal is known among alpinists as the “mountaineering village”. For a long time, locals have been guiding tourists to the snow-capped peaks. Until now, this activity was reserved for men. Until some women dare to turn Pakistan’s traditional gender roles on their head.
