18th Tegernsee International Mountain Film Festival!

Dear Film Makers and Producers,

this week, we intended to remind you of the submission deadline for this year’s Tegernsee International Mountain Film Festival – we intended! Without these films, the wonderful result of your hard work, there would be no Mountain Film Festival. The atmospheric gatherings of the mountain film community would lack and with them the opportunity to express our lifestyle and passion for the mountains.

Indeed – our intention was to inspire your interest and excitement regarding the upcoming Mountain Film Festival in Tegernsee planned for 14 to 18 October, when suddenly we found ourselves forced into the role of corona crisis managers.

As in previous years, our preparations for the 18th Mountain Film Festival began as early as January, and to date we have already received more than 50 film submissions. A high carat programme of films and a great festival atmosphere are every bit as important to us as the safety and health of our visitors. That is why we decided a couple of days ago to cancel this year’s festival. We do this with a heavy heart, but also with the conviction that it is the right thing to do and that you will understand our decision.

Naturally we did discuss alternatives, but neither delaying the festival date nor an online event seemed reasonable solutions. We know that our festival derives its magic from strong images on the actual silver screen, from your personal presence as well as that of your protagonists and from the visitors’ enthusiasm. However, this year, it is the coronavirus that takes centre stage in all areas of life.

We hope that the COVID-19 pandemic will be sufficiently under control by autumn 2021 for us to resume hosting our Mountain Film Festival. With your permission, we will transfer all submissions received up to now to the registration list for 2021 (2017 will be remain as earliest possible year of production). If you agree to this proposal, we would appreciate a brief response. In any case, we will once again invite you to participate in our festival by February 2021 latest.

As we hope not to disappear completely from the mountain film scene, we would like to use this communication channel to regularly facilitate access for our mountain film friends to particularly watchable productions from the past 17 festivals. This project however still requires a certain amount of administration and some patience. Further information will be posted on our homepage over the course of the summer.

The corona crisis harbours an opportunity – so wise individuals write and tell us – an opportunity to reflect on our lives, habits, behaviours and expectations, to experience what really matters and to recognize the value of togetherness and solidarity. We hope that in the foreseeable future, we will again reach a “normal, renewed state of coexistence” which once again includes space for enjoyment of nature and the mountains and that us Tegernsee folks will see you again at our next Mountain Film Festival.

Until then we wish you good health and all the best!
